Recent Violence Leads Police To More Illegal Guns

Gun violence over the last few weeks in Omaha has exploded. Police have investigated four homicides in that time, but the spike in shootings has led to a spike in the tips to investigators.
Getting illegal weapons off the street is one benefit of the increase in sharing information with police. Some 700 firearms have been confiscated by the Omaha Police Department this year.
"Any illegal gun we can get off the street makes a huge difference," said Lt. Shayna Ray with OPD.
Ray said the recent rise in weapons seizures is thanks to community tips, 911 calls, and traffic and investigative stops.
"As we recognize that it's going to take a village to solve these problems, the village is starting to step forward and cooperate with one another," said Omaha City Councilman Ben Gray.
A gunman took the lives of Lendale Kyles, 21, and Xavon Watson, 18, two weeks ago. That was the first of four fatal shootings in five days. Angelo Domena and Adrian Lessley were killed in two other separate shooting incidents.
"This foolishness is not OK and it needs to stop," said Gray.
One key to the increase in the efforts to get weapons off the streets is OPD's gun bounty program. One tip concerning an illegal firearm and one arrest means $500 for the person who steps up.
"One gun could prevent a shooting or a homicide," said Ray.
Examples of illegal firearms are a felon with a gun, non-registered handguns, stolen weapons or defaced firearms.
Anyone can turn in a weapon through Omaha's gun bounty program by calling Omaha Crime Stoppers at 444-STOP.

Pelini Apologizes For Sideline Tirades

Nebraska coach Bo Pelini apologized for his sideline tirades during a loss at Texas A&M. He also quashed rumors that Taylor Martinez had quit the team in the wake of an animated exchange he had with the quarterback that was seen on national TV.
Nebraska chancellor Harvey Perlman on Sunday publicly admonished Pelini for his conduct. Pelini said he spoke with Perlman on Monday morning and promised to keep his temper under control.
The Cornhuskers were penalized 16 times in the 9-6 loss on Saturday.
Pelini said he believes it's OK to let an official know he disagrees with a call, but it's wrong to "make it personal." Pelini said he "let it get personal."
Pelini said Martinez would play Friday against Colorado if he's healthy

My question is, "How long do you think these men should be put away for??"

Child Care Provider Charged With Abuse Diane Honaker Accused In Shaken Baby Case

A Sarpy County woman is charged with intentional child abuse, a felony, related to an alleged incident in her home child care.
Diane Honaker, 50, was arrested after parents of a six-month-old child discovered the baby was injured. Her bond was set at $75,000 Thursday morning in Sarpy County Court.
According to Sarpy County investigators, the parents of the unnamed child took the six-month-old to the hospital on Nov. 12 An examination determined the child's injuries were the result of being shaken.
"Our investigators went to the hospital and interviewed the doctors there and the family, and it was determined that most likely, the injuries occurred at an in-home day care," said Sarpy County Lt. Mark Trapp.
Honaker was arrested following an interview with investigators.
The child's current condition is unknown, but investigators told KETV NewsWatch 7 it did not appear the baby's injuries were life threatening. The baby was throwing-up blood before the parents took the child to the hospital. Doctors found blood on the child's brain.
Trapp said the injuries were consistent with shaken baby syndrome.
The Nebraska Department of Social Services issued an emergency order on Monday to close Honaker's child care, at 15821 Briar Street. Emergency orders are issued when necessary to protect the immediate safety of a child, according to the state.
Trapp said the baby girl may have had allergies and that may be what have led to what happened in the day care.
"It's not uncommon to see a child of that age that's fussy and people that are trying to stop that child from crying," Trapp said. "This obviously is not the way to do it and causes some pretty severe injuries."
A friend of Honaker told KETV NewsWatch 7 Thursday morning that Honaker has operated the daycare for the past four years.
Honaker was held in the Sarpy County jail on $75,000 bond, with a court appearance set for Thursday.

Do you think she should have been charged with abuse??
